    Barry's brilliant Brahms

I gather that Barry Douglas is recording all of Brahms piano music but unfortunately I only caught half of yesterday's lunchtime recital. What I heard encourages me to listen to the repeat/iPlayer recording - lovely op116/4 encore.

Certainly worth a listen (again), and repeated on Sat 15th at 2pm.

But to my ears BD sounds heartfelt though lacking some insight in the Intermezzi beside the mesmeric Glenn Gould... there's seemingly infinite subtlety in Gould's playing. When you think you know the music intimately, he reveals moments of unexpected, fleeting beauty that one might have missed over several lifetimes. Apparently, of all his myriad recordings, it was the one he was most satisfied with.

Will give this a listen. Always been an admirer of Barry Douglas' generous, warm hearted pianism. Lupu, Kempff, Gilels, Perahia and Katchen are personal favourites in this repertoire.

I agree about the Glenn Gould performance of op116/4 and must listen to the remainder.
But Barry Douglas is such a fine player and Brahms so neglected in recital these days that I applaud BD's programming.
