    Berio and Verdi - 7th December 2012

    Berio Sinfonia
Verdi, orch. Berio Eight Romances for tenor and orchestra
    Verdi Four Sacred Pieces

    Josep Pons conductor
    Sarah-Jane Brandon soprano
    Atalla Ayan tenor
    Synergy Vocals
    BBC Symphony Chorus

Rather amusing to see top billing at http://www.bbc.co.uk/orchestras/symphonyorchestra/ for a soloist who sings something more like eight sacred bars, while according to The Times, Synergy Vocals are "an offshoot of the Swingle Sisters".

Well at least The Times didn't describe them as fundamentally Reichian.

I wouldn't speak too soon. You never know which critic they'll send along.

... as opposed to the Scissor Singers?

A fantastic concert in exceptional sound, the Berio Sinfonia and the unfamiliar Verdi 4 Sacred Pieces played with vision, force and subtlety. The Songs which opened part two went on a little too long, but the Verdi was a revelation. What a glorious piece! If the orchestra's virtuosity in the Berio tended to dominate that of the soloists, I wasn't about to complain. The piece came up sparkling fresh, with depth and wit a part of its broad expressive compass. Great programming, sonic and musical treat, one of the best of R3's autumn schedule.

And I don't know what I'd do without the HD live stream, an essential part of my listening calendar now - an essential luxury, really.

Amusing how the comments on Friday stopped at 19:25! Listeners were just too stunned to comment later... right?

But it really was very good, honest!
And now, back to the burrow...

I only managed to catch the last of the three items and must confess to my crass ignorance at never having heard Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces previously; much as I've always respected him, I admit to being no great fan of most of Verdi, but these pieces were utterly stunning and profoundly moving!
