      By starting with Sibelius 4, the format of this programme reminds me of a comment made by Simon Rattle, in the days before his elevation to the ranks of the nobility, that Tapiola was essentially unprogrammable. IIRC, he said that you couldn't open a concert with it as the audience hadn't properly settled; you couldn't have anything follow it as it would trivialise the succeeding piece; and you couldn't finish with it as it was too short!

        Pretty impressive Grieg from young Benjamin. Remarkable freshness and imagination without distortion.

        Altogether a fine programme.

            Interesting. I've heard Tapiola twice, both times opening the concert, with an intermission following.

              Only heard the Tchaikovsky! (Sibelious was on too early)
              I don't often hear this on Radio 3 so congrats for programming it! Enjoyed every minute of it. Well, the loud bits anyway!

              Quite odd ending with this though.
