As to Bach, there are now so many excellent specialist ensembles, I think it is a brave thing for a ‘standard’ orchestra to perform Bach at a concert. So, well done BBC Philharmonic.

I thought the concert was a stunning experience. Juanjo Mena conducted the BBC Philharmonic superbly in one of the finest performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 that I have ever heard. Mena has proved to me his assurance in conducting larger scale late Romantic works having given superb performances in the last couple of seasons: Bruckner Symphonies No. 6 and No. 7, and Mahler Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection’ and only last month Mahler Symphony No. 5.

The opening work J.S. Bach’s appealing Cantata No. 147 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben' was well performed too. I felt the Manchester Chamber Choir improved greatly throughout the work. I especially enjoyed the solo performances by counter-tenor Robin Blaze and baritone Roderick Williams was in magnificent voice. Transmitted live on BBC Radio 3 the BBC Philharmonic will miss a trick by not releasing this performance of Bruckner 9 on CD.

A whole lot cheaper and to the majority amateur listener not a whole lot of difference!

My local amateur orchestra is performing Bruckner 7 next April. I'm looking forward to this as much (if not more) as if it were the Berlin Phil at the Proms.

Sorry, more excuse. I should be more careful what I say.

I suppose these days we are so used to hearing choirs like Monteverdi, often on CDs, we tend to notice anything less than perfect. As Stanfordian says, Manchester Chamber improved greatly. I admire Monteverdi but I also admire armature choirs without whom a lot of live performances would be impossible. And I did think you were good.

Incidentally, Jayne hasn’t posted since her last post here. She did say she wasn’t feeling too well a few days ago, I hope she isn’t too ill. (Mind you, I expect she’d feed her cats and the birds even if she can’t face a crumb herself and have to crawl out the bed). I hope you will feel better soon Jayne if you are not well. The Forum feels a bit draughty without you reviews.
