Folowing the namechecks for Haitink, Boulez, etc., meant to say that it really pays to go off-the-beaten with Mahler 7. Two real humdingers are Neumann with the Leipzig Gewandhaus on Berlin Classics (1967 I think - he was often more exciting with them than the Czech Phil) and Kondrashin with the Leningrad Phil from 1975. Both readings are sharply-defined, urgent and vividly characterised - truly gripping. Kondrashin takes 72'45. Alarmed that I can't find the Neumann - must have put it back on the wrong shelf...
