BBC4 19.30 Fri 2 Nov: Lang Lang Plays Liszt at the Roundhouse

"...an amazing light show, this concert offers a spectacular and unique audiovisual experience, featuring nine of Liszt's finest solo piano pieces.

Including: Liszt's La Campanella, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15 'Rakoczy March, Un sospiro, Standchen, Consolation No 2, Hungarian Rhapsody No 6, Widmung, Ave Maria (Schubert) and more."

Lang Lang performs a recital featuring nine of Liszt's finest solo piano pieces.

Your chance to sneer at a remarkable pianist and remind us that Arrau & Bolet didn't do audiovisual experiences (but I bet Cziffra would have loved to!).

I've tried, but it's unwatchable. Migraine-inducing. This is not to comment in any way on his playing. It would probably be great on radio.

There's something naggingly empty about the whole experience.

Agreed. Had to turn it off after 20 minutes.

I'd rather gnaw my own leg off.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

I'm glad I didn't watch as I have enough sight problems.

I think the RT and anyone who writes of Lang Lang as [quote] 'Many regard to be the world's finest classical music virtuoso' is doing this extremely talented young man a disservice.

Does anyone agree? Have we to admire ONE composer, ONE violinist,ONE conductor. Aw shucks

Pleased that the RT got the listing for this evening on BBC HD wrong - scheduled is another hour devoted to LL... but in fact they are broadcasting again the extended 'Culture Show' interview with Sam Mendes about the new Bond film (which was on BBC2 while I was away this week, among other things watching and loving the film)... Infinitely more interesting!!

Spot on, salymap but given time he'll find his own level, I hope. I agree that he is very talented and I'd hoped that Barenboim's influence would steer him towards becoming an artist rather than a showman. Time will tell

'Morning RACH 3 - and welcome! It looks as if you won't get a roasting for your first contribution (though if you stick around I can't guarantee you won't later on ...!).

There are obviously two conflicting concerns here (in fact, just as there are with Radio 3): a genuine wish to get more people interested in classical music while still keeping an appeal to classical music fans. The methods used seem to divide the audiences rather than unite them. But, of course, bigger audiences mean more money. It's would be a shame, though, for genuine talent to be subverted. Perhaps Lang will manage to separate his two lives - perhaps he should be ultra formal, without abandoning his technical fireworks, in his presentation for some concerts. That style might impress some parts of his new audience more.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The problem seems to lie more with the picture!
