Only very small consolation is that it is not Stephen Johnson who is being made to perform the trick (for this occasion at least). But honestly, what are we seeing?

And they had a nerve to call this Discovering Music??

But it seems to me that R3's budget has been slashed more than most. As the Ofcom Annual Report said - the biggest PSB cuts have been in the arts/classical music.
But is it really less expensive to produce a programme with guests and email ‘interaction’ than to produce a programme prepared and presented by Stephen Johnson or Anthony Payne in the original but shorter form of Discovering Music?

Oh yes! Now that's something worth taking a note of.

I suppose it depends who the guests are. I'm never sure whether they get paid or whether they're vanity appearances.

I think Richard Sisson would be cheaper than the BBCNOW ...

There was quite an interesting 'insert' into In Tune yesterday where Ulrich somebody from Steinway was talking about 'the grand piano action' with contributions from the wonderful Angela Hewitt and from DON.

Given that the piano is such a mainstay of classical music (switch on R3 at random times and the chances are you'll hear a piano) should we on The Forum be getting more fired up about this 'Piano Season' ? Or, like the late Thurston Dart, would we prefer to live in a piano-free zone?

Couldn't see anywhere else to put this but on Monday nights for 6 weeks there is an interval talk called 'Piano Keys',, presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch!

What happened was that on the Internet, Radio3 as part of their Piano Season asked listeners to put forward any problems they have with their piano playing. I contributed and mine was piano playing with dyspraxia, of which I have and they wanted me to talk live p. the programme of which I did! Was rather nervous but I think went ok!

When the winner of the dumbing-down BBC contest is announced, he/she will probably becaome a part-time professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music.

Ulrich Gerhartz - Director, Concert and Artist Services at Steinway and Son. I wish I'd heard him.

I know Thurston Dart preferred his tinkly clavichords or the serpent which used to decorate the staircase at Kings', but I wonder if he was a secret pianist.

Well done, BBM! How do you get on playing a brass instrument (I'm assuming you do).

                      Brilliant BBM.
My problem is not having a piano (even if I had one I wouldn't be able to play it).
When I win the lottery I will buy a house big enough to fit a piano in ,buy one and learn to play Alkan.

Steven Osborne again on dazzling form in today's Ravel recital at lunchtime.
I heard him play a poorly attended Ravel recital at Snape in August and he was truly exceptional.
One of the pianists I make an effort to hear.

Does anyone have a Yamaha AvantGrand hybrid piano? I tried one at Chappells in London on 8th September, and was amazed by its resonance, despite being a fake, electronic instrument.

                            ER and FF

Well I play the tuba, which I am a lot better at than my keyboard skills! Only I e cliff and my RH is better than my LH, which is the one I use for the valves with the tuba. I am trying my best to cope with the advice that was given to me but with rather on the difficult side!

                            ER

Well when I win the lottery I will to but I won't even attempt to try and learn any Alkan!!

I probably haven't scanned the posts on this thread carefully enough, but IMO one very good thing about this 'piano season' is CotW, its Clementi theme and its outings of various early pianos at Finchcocks and elsewhere.
