Very belatedly I stand corrected - got the wrong 'S' - and is better beer Sharp's 'Doom Bar' I find bland in comparison.

Wonderful last night when PT interviewed John Sessions, and while JS wanted to talk about the MUSIC, partic the 2nd Viennese School, all PT did was clodhoppngly interpolate BBC plugs into it.

Talk about a non-meeting of minds! PT made himself look foolish.

I apologize if I am extending this thread beyond its natural life, but I thought i would share an occasion some months ago when a BBC concert was being relayed by France Musique. The original announcer is usually heard just before the FM presenter, and on this occasion a femail voice (I know not which) burst into the applause with "A rapturous reception there for that truly magnificent performance of..." prompting "Magnifique? Elle est bien devenue critique?" from the French presenter. I have no idea whether or not he knew he was on air, I suspect so.

France Musique announcers have a charming air of sounding as though they were asked to undertake the task 5 minutes beforehand, did not wish to, have only just realised what the music is, and are thinking on their feet, trying to dream up something to say. They usually manage to get across quite a bit of misinformation, and liberally sprinkle it with mais...ou...et...donc...or...ni...car...and long pauses. On one occasion he claimed not to know if there was to be an interval, as the BBC hadn't supplied him with details of the concert. TLNOTP is being relayed tomorrow, I might listen in just to hear how they handle it.

Thanks, S-A. An update - tonight's announcer is really having to dig into her store of pauses to cover up the raffish logorythmic one, but she appears to have done her homework. Delius = compositeur anglais d'origine allemand domicilie en France.

Well, I'd like to commend everyone to listen to Donald Macleod's exemplary handling of the Budapest Fest Orch / Fischer recently.

No gush, no describing the audience -size, behaviour, dress, or the presenter's emotions, just plain but telling quotes from first perf reviews, Mahler's own letters which actually illuminated the MUSIC. Excellent. Basic research, basic courtesy and basic unobtrusive education. R3 at its best.
