Re msg 28, a figure of speech I realise but wouldn't it be grand if primary school teachers actually introduced Smetana's chamber music to their pupils with or without the reference to tinnitus. Actually I'd be surprised if many A level music students have been so enjoined by their teachers but I'd be glad to be corrected.

To be fair to Tom Service, he did give a decent interval after the Beethoven Nine before giving us a load of unwanted tosh.

He did... but after his coronary-inducing, hysterical roar of "HERE HE IS!!!!!" greeted the astounding, astonishing event of Barenboim appearing on stage shortly before the performance started, I was on tenterhooks for the Man Most In Need Of Intravenous Diazepam to bellow seconds after the final chord.

He really has turned into a buffoon (he used to be ok).

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Don't knock Diazepam, I'm on 10mgr per day as a muscle relaxant for a trapped nerve in my thigh. Taken with 4 double G&Ts and 2 continental lagers it's woozily wonderful (although if you put your head down anywhere, you tend not to wake up for 9 hours).

I was advocating its use, mind you, rather than knocking it!

If my GP reads this thread I don't think he'll be advocating it for me anymore

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Isn't it the same with all the presenters? They used to be good, but now they have to be jolly, bright, annoying and nauseous, because they will be out of a job if they don't toe the line. I know I have to do some pretty silly things in order to keep my job and I'm quite sure it's the same for them.

I mistakenly thought that your first enquiry was a rhetorical question implying incredulity that Service could have behaved so absurdly
