Were they playing the Rite on one piano or two? I think there are arrangements for both (Ashley Wass and Simon Crawford-Phillips played on two pianos at a PCM two or three years back. Amazing!

Monteux, who had the experience of hearing Stravinsky perform the pre-score at the piano, said that without the benefit of hearing the work in its orchestral splendour, his impression was that the composer had gone completely mad. Heard with the orchestral version ringing at the back of ones mind, the -two piano version (not heard of a one-piano version) does make sense. I'm sure Stravinsky drew on its pianistic percussionism when he finally decided on scoring Les Noces, and many great composers subsequently benefitted: Debussy in "En Blanc et Noir", Casella in Pagine di Guerra, Bartok in the first two piano concertos, the piano sonata, the Outdoors Suite and Sonata for two pianos and percussion, Villa-Lobos in Rudepoema, Messiaen in Visions de L'Amen and Canteyojdjaya, to name just a few. I'll be turning more of my attention to the piano scoring of Jeux - a work which to me really does seem inseparable from its fine orchestration.
