And what a feat for Sir Colin, who must be 84 and not all that well. Did he seem to be better than he has been recently, or was he too far away to tell?

      Looking pretty chirpy though: http://instagr.am/p/MWKs62pgj2/
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Great to see, Caliban - many thanks

He really is one of my favourite conductors

Indeed. I was seriously impressed by his ability to hold all that lot together and be in charge of so much noise. He sounded quite frail in the pre-concert interview. And having musicians scattered over such distances and in such an acoustic is notoriously risky!

Well, I have been told, from the inside, that, although Sir Colin is not as active, bodywise now than he was, his mind is. Ther LSO love him and and really look after him, making suire he doesn't over do it. His family have an awful lot of inpout to when he goes there.

Does anyone know if it will have been recorded, eg. by LSO Live? I'll have to listen via iPlayer/listen again - which I think is still available.

Yes, LSO confirmed to me on Tuesday that an LSO Live recording will result from this pair of concerts.

I remember him coming in to the music library and meeting Alex Gibson, both wearing uniform for their National Service. One Army, one Air Force, but I forget which way round. That's a few years ago, I'm glad he is still functioning well. One of my favourites too, especially in Berlioz.

According to wikipedia : "Davis served as a clarinettist in the band of the Household Cavalry."

Yes I thought it that way round. Colin was conducting the Kalmar Orchestra and the Chelsea Opera Group at about then.

PS I was very young - about 18 then.

Listening to it now on iPlayer and find the opening tempo so soporific as to be unlistenable by these ears. Will persevere but somehow think I will be giving it a miss.
