Would anyone disagree if I added Willi Boscovsky to those names?

One could hardly disagree, and may I put in a good word for Lorin Maazel too?

Tho' I regret the absence of B. Kay, I regret even more the demise of the feed of the ORF announcer's presentation in his Austrian accented German, and his farewell in a dozen or so languages. The presentation was echt-European in those days, and has become rather bland.
Kernel: You could listen to the concert on the Austrian Radio via the internet. Go to the ORF website and then to ORF1, click on 'musik' and 'programme'. Thinking of listening to it again on their 7Day player. Incidentally, there is a live concert from the Musikverein on Jan 16. Mariss Jansons conducts the VPO in DSCH 6 and Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. 10am our time on ORF1.

Wouldn't that be great on Radio 3? The Mozartfest will be over by then.

Yes, it's easy to forget just what a wonderful orchestra this is.

Mermaids of the Danube - thats one I've never heard before.

Petrushka: thanks for the tip - I hadn't thought of that. Think I'll go for the 7Day player later on. I'm settled now and enjoying it from R3.

On the question of pronunciation (raised elsewhere on these boards) I note that the titles of the pieces have been anglicised - perhaps for the benefit of a presenter not, shall we say, feted for his pronunciation of European tongues.

Franz Welser-Most gets right inside this music. It might be expected that Austrian conductors would be most at home with music of the Strauss family, but that is rather like saying all English conductors would be equally at home with Elgar. The last Austrian to be really successful in a New Year's Day concert was (probably) Karajan.
In all honesty, I couldn't recommend Harnoncourt, which was like Viennese music in handcuffs.

One big disappointment. Last year they broadcast the visual aspect of it in HD - this year, they haven't bothered. (They'd placed cameras around the interior of the Musikverein, strategically placed to highlight aspects of the ornamentation - it was absolutely stunning.) (I understand from the Vienna Phil website that it's being broadcast by ORT2 in HD - but apparently ORT2 is broadcast encrypted, so this may have something to do with it.)

I must say, I think it's all going swimmingly.

One problem- there are far too many female musicians in the VPO these days. I've seen at least two this morning.

What on earth is the world coming to?

So the number's going down then? When the VPO played at the Proms a few years ago, there were at least half a dozen.

Yes Maazel was memorable for me too - and occasionally, like Boskovsky (who was Schlagsahne to the VPO's Torte) led from the fiddle. I'm finding FW-M a little staid* in some numbers by comparison - though here memory may be unreliable. But.... Happy New Year to all. kb

I make it four: three first violins (including one on front desk) and one harp.

My first thought exactly - the same word came to mind.
