Tho' I regret the absence of B. Kay, I regret even more the demise of the feed of the ORF announcer's presentation in his Austrian accented German, and his farewell in a dozen or so languages. The presentation was echt-European in those days, and has become rather bland."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Thinking of listening to it again on their 7Day player. Incidentally, there is a live concert from the Musikverein on Jan 16. Mariss Jansons conducts the VPO in DSCH 6 and Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. 10am our time on ORF1.

On the question of pronunciation (raised elsewhere on these boards) I note that the titles of the pieces have been anglicised - perhaps for the benefit of a presenter not, shall we say, feted for his pronunciation of European tongues.

Franz Welser-Most gets right inside this music. It might be expected that Austrian conductors would be most at home with music of the Strauss family, but that is rather like saying all English conductors would be equally at home with Elgar. The last Austrian to be really successful in a New Year's Day concert was (probably) Karajan.
In all honesty, I couldn't recommend Harnoncourt, which was like Viennese music in handcuffs.

One big disappointment. Last year they broadcast the visual aspect of it in HD - this year, they haven't bothered. (They'd placed cameras around the interior of the Musikverein, strategically placed to highlight aspects of the ornamentation - it was absolutely stunning.) (I understand from the Vienna Phil website that it's being broadcast by ORT2 in HD - but apparently ORT2 is broadcast encrypted, so this may have something to do with it.)

I must say, I think it's all going swimmingly.
One problem- there are far too many female musicians in the VPO these days. I've seen at least two this morning.
