    .
This sounds like a wonderfully old fashioned Radio 3 production, with a pertinent interval talk

    Many thanks Hornspieler

Has the red type any significance or it it my computer, if I am allowed to ask?

I find red print very difficult to see, as do others, I am sure.

        HS.

Belohlavek conducting Suk should be worth hearing, and Faust is a superbly vigorous Violinist who should bring out the fire of the Brahms.

          Agreed.
Sorry to see the Americanism "leads" instead of "conducts" creeping into the Beeb's publicity. What do they imagine the Leader does? Concert-masters I suppose!

I always begin The Ripening with hope... but usually end disappointed. Will it be different this time? Or will I still see the beloved Asrael as towering above anything else he did...

missed the beginning of the Brahms, were we told about that odd timpani-accompanied cadenza to the first movement? a new one on me (not that that's saying much)

It's by Busoni; it's Isabelle Faust's preferred cadenza & she invariably plays it beautifully & IMO makes it sound absolutely convincing

I thought that was a thrillingly vital performance of the Brahms . Isabelle Faust is surely one if the very finest violinists around . It had much of the refreshing vivacity of her recent Beethoven recording without ever seeming rushed .

oh thanks - I'm sure it could grow on me
my innocent ear really enjoyed the Suk - gorgeous atmospheric opening and close - and plenty to hold the attention inbetween, sounded very well played to me

The Ripening did indeed sound well-played, but I still couldn't make much of it. I bought the same performers' 24-bit download a while ago, suffice to say I've since deleted it... yes, it's atmospheric, has a beautiful, fading end, but where are the ideas, any sense of shape, or even a compelling "organic" continuous development, emotionally or musically? It just seems to get a little louder, a little angrier and more impassioned, then fade away.

So I'm left with my earlier impression: this is "reflections on Asrael" again, since all his earlier music seems to lead up, (unknowing, in its relative formality, fantasy and brightness) to that adored, death-inspired masterpiece; and then, slowly and painfully, less and less memorably, lead away from it, haunted by the unique, shattering, towering tragedy that it embodies.

Asrael: a great Poem of Loss. The Ripening: trying to live with what's left; grieving, yearning, protesting - exhausted, in the smoking ruins; imagining, but not believing, some final consolation...

One should try and hear Busoni's cadenza for the Beethoven vn con. There's a lot of Bach, unsurprisingly, but it is decidedly striking.
