Yes, it was pretty bad. Why do singers do it? They never have any idea (unless they are from that world) and it's usually opera/lieder singers who have unfortunately just passed their sell by date. For some reason they think singing in that style must be easy, when its just as hard to get it right. Remember the Berstein fiasco when the record company got in two opera singers to sing the main parts in West Side Story! Old Lenny was tearing his hair out and swearing like a trooper.

French Frank the Baptist heralding the second coming. (Or is it the fifth?)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Certainly plenty of odd conductors to choose from! Excepting yourself Maestro with your new career . . . or am I thinking of your new carer?

Maybe three or four, but being an expert conductor, counting is not my strong point ...

Please tell me why I didnt warm to the Cellist's performance as opposed to the pianists(I don't even like the Grieg!! I prefer the Walton anyday!)

I've said this on the other thread. It comes down to a musician versus a note player, for me, but then you may have different criteria.

Needs more rehearsal if you're to sound spontaneous, Panyan

I finally caught the recorder player tonight having recorded the whole programme. She is obviously talented but struck me as rather over awed by the occasion and it seemed very long for a Vivaldi concerto .

Just spotted this in yesterday's Telegraph
The BBC has been accused of dumbing down the coverage of its Young Musician classical music competition for fear of appearing too middle class.

It seemed too long for me after hearing the first few bars.

Q: How many flute concertos did Vivaldi write?

A: One - but he wrote it twelve times.

BTW Congrats to Ariosto for joining the Stick Waggers and Pace Setters Social Club. (But think of how much London Transport saved by getting rid of Conductors altogether)

                            Ye-e-e-e-s ...

"A BBC spokesperson said: "It is absurd to accuse BBC Young Musician of dumbing down. For thirty-four years the competition has celebrated the most talented young performers from across the UK and this year alone the competition received 453 applicants.

“The final three soloists performed to the highest musical standard and all the programmes made and broadcast by the BBC showcased every performer in a non-elitist and celebratory format."

All that does is to show how unhelpful it is to use a phrase like 'dumbing down', because the BBC doesn't interpret it in the same way as others do - hence the denial. They say 'a non-elitist and celebratory format'; others say 'dumbed-down gush'. If only we spoke the same language!

I loved that final sting in the tail, "The competition, which was initially called Young Musician of the Year before it became biennial ... ". Now that's a real "non-elitist and celebratory format" change for you.

Which was really the substance of the complaint

& the Beeb is proud of it!
