Yes, it was pretty bad. Why do singers do it? They never have any idea (unless they are from that world) and it's usually opera/lieder singers who have unfortunately just passed their sell by date. For some reason they think singing in that style must be easy, when its just as hard to get it right. Remember the Berstein fiasco when the record company got in two opera singers to sing the main parts in West Side Story! Old Lenny was tearing his hair out and swearing like a trooper.

I've said this on the other thread. It comes down to a musician versus a note player, for me, but then you may have different criteria.

I finally caught the recorder player tonight having recorded the whole programme. She is obviously talented but struck me as rather over awed by the occasion and it seemed very long for a Vivaldi concerto .

“The final three soloists performed to the highest musical standard and all the programmes made and broadcast by the BBC showcased every performer in a non-elitist and celebratory format."

All that does is to show how unhelpful it is to use a phrase like 'dumbing down', because the BBC doesn't interpret it in the same way as others do - hence the denial. They say 'a non-elitist and celebratory format'; others say 'dumbed-down gush'. If only we spoke the same language!
