I too thought the outcome was the correct one - but it's only my opinion. Some of the comments don't really make much sense when watching via TV, so the remark that the last contestant had the loudest sound - the widest dynamic range (which may well have been true) - doesn't match with what's actually heard in living rooms after the sound has been mangled by the broadcast audio chain. -

Anna Lapwood is by far the best presenter of the TV programmes that I can recall. Someone who has a wide command and enthusiasm of her subject and is able to communicate and interview engagingly. Just the right amount of biography on the musicians and no ‘how did that go?’ when they come off the stage, thank goodness.Comment

WOODWIND FINALS
I thought the clarinet gave the oboe a very close run. I thought the clarinettist had edged it but those two certainly stood out.Last edited by ardcarp; 11-05-20, 07:50.Comment

I've only seen the potted version so far. Look forward to hearing all the performances on i-Player.
I was very impressed with the recorder player, and her piece that was chosen for the potted version was accompanied by a harpist who accompanied her exquisitely. I suppose awarding a gong for the best accompanist might be a tricky exercise!Comment

Were the accompanists credited anywhere? Not obvious if they were.
The recorder player had the edge IMHO with that something extra that communicates with an audience. Great to hear five different woodwind instruments, especially the bassoon which I don't remember being in the category finals before?Comment

Usual apples and pears stuff. How on earth does one judge between these players on different instruments?
The flute player was extremely good, though I thought her tone was too strong for the CPE Bach piece - not exactly a HIPP performance. The Ibert concerto is a very difficult piece to play - I was surprised that she attempted it. The clarinet and oboe players were both very good too. The recorder player was outstanding, but I figured she was never going to win, even with (or perhaps because of ...) a recorder player on the judging panel. I enjoyed the bassoon, though I think the player didn't realise she was rushing some parts of her music.
One thing I did wonder about - whether the TV audio quality was really sufficiently good enough to demonstrate these players to the best - or most realistic (whatever that is..) effect. There may well have been dynamic levelling and other audio effects applied, which would make it very hard to judge the playing from one's living room in front of a TV.Comment
