Thanks. She's not a performing musician then.

Certainly not a current performer, though she may be able to play instruments. That's not clear. There should be several performing musicians or teachers on the judging panels, IMO. Typically either current performers, or music school professors, who would know what to look for. Piers would certainly have met that requirement, but whether he would have voted for or against a player of his own instrument(s) I can't say. Players of "outlier" instruments may not be treated as fairly as those who play more "common" instruments. A judge who favoured players of his or her own instrument could be accused of bias, but compensating in the opposite direction would also be biased.

The year when the young trombone player won was remarkable, though one of the first winners played the trombone.

        Seems reasonably clear to me

Angela studied music at London University
Since musicology isn't a GCSE or A level subject (unlike the O level I did) it would be rather hard to get a place to study music at a university without being able to play or sing a little.

And 2 minutes on a search engine

Angela was born in London, educated in Essex and Suffolk and studied guitar, clarinet and piano. She went on to study Music at the University of London

Basically she's an executive...OK for the performing arts...so she presumably has some 'casting vote' role. But is she looking for marketability? Did the BBC Competition organisers give her some Bullet-Points? IMVHO judges should all be performing musicians at the top of their tree.

            Nonsense

How on earth do you come to that conclusion?
            Have you met her ?

The problem with some (I said SOME) "performing musicians" is that they can have little understanding of other musics than the one they are involved in.
I've met several orchestral musicians who have no idea at all about why (for example) chromatic scales are "problematic" on the harp.

I found this final interesting . I felt to a degree the keyboard final judges very much went with their hearts as to who was the most musicianly and I agreed with them.

I also preferred the clarinettist and indeed the recorder player to the winner . The oboist did come across as the most mature player but in a sort of dry way. I found his jazz piece a touch nerdy and the Schumann cool. I tried not to be prejudiced by the fact he reminded me of Michael Gove !

In the extended i-Player version they were. Good.

                    The full Monti

I could barely believe this - but so far the tuba player is the one who's grabbed my attention.

Will watch to the end to see if there's a better performance.

Another group of amazing musicians oozing humility and love for their instruments. The tuba player wasn’t clearly recorded to my ears with the balance between him and the piano very odd and distant. A stand out winner who is a possible finalist. No nerves, engages the audience and has the undefinable special quality. She’s up and ready for the profession. The other performers allowed nerves to impede giving their ultimate best.

The last contender - another trombone player - was very good, so I think it might have been hard to choose between him and the horn player.

                          What profession?

(not 100% serious on this either)

I suppose you'd have liked her to play the Monti piece too..... I'm not serious, either.

Agreed, just watched the highlights programme... The winner was the one who held my attention most (although I wondered at the time if that was because of the choice of repertoire): that Schumann was The Real Thing. She’s actually the only contestant so far who has sent me to the iPlayer to hear their complete performance.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
