The year when the young trombone player won was remarkable, though one of the first winners played the trombone.

How on earth do you come to that conclusion?
Have you met her ?
The problem with some (I said SOME) "performing musicians" is that they can have little understanding of other musics than the one they are involved in.
I've met several orchestral musicians who have no idea at all about why (for example) chromatic scales are "problematic" on the harp.

I found this final interesting . I felt to a degree the keyboard final judges very much went with their hearts as to who was the most musicianly and I agreed with them.
I also preferred the clarinettist and indeed the recorder player to the winner . The oboist did come across as the most mature player but in a sort of dry way. I found his jazz piece a touch nerdy and the Schumann cool. I tried not to be prejudiced by the fact he reminded me of Michael Gove !

Another group of amazing musicians oozing humility and love for their instruments. The tuba player wasn’t clearly recorded to my ears with the balance between him and the piano very odd and distant. A stand out winner who is a possible finalist. No nerves, engages the audience and has the undefinable special quality. She’s up and ready for the profession. The other performers allowed nerves to impede giving their ultimate best.

Agreed, just watched the highlights programme... The winner was the one who held my attention most (although I wondered at the time if that was because of the choice of repertoire): that Schumann was The Real Thing. She’s actually the only contestant so far who has sent me to the iPlayer to hear their complete performance."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
