I'm just listening to the Piano Concerto (1st movement) Never have I heard such distortion and mannered playing.

Somebody should explain to the soloist the difference between a string orchestra and an elastic band!!!! HS

      Roll on the Walton Symphony!

Oh dear... a Walton One with mediocre sound, not enough fury and certainly not enough jazz... was the conductor getting in the players' way here perhaps? More than one hesitant and uncertain entry...

Previn's brilliant bullseye of a recording pinned this wild masterpiece down so completely, one feels a little sorry for all who come after, but still... brave effort tonight I'm sure, but - no cigar and certainly no champagne.

Must dash and get those lemon soles in the oven.

Caught bits of this while out and about and it didn't sound too bad on the car radio, but obviously I wasn't really concentrating.

          Unbeatable IMO.

Walton's 1st Symphony is a difficult work and the orchestra played all the notes, but was it the audience's tumultuous applause for that dreadful Rachmaninov performance that decided them to afford the "customers" no more than a "Brief Encounter" with the savagery and melancholy of Walton's masterpiece?

There must have been steam issuing from Silvestri's grave in St Peter's Churchyard during last night's concert. Even the Katchaturian ballet music failed to get off the ground.

Heard Willy Walton Symphony no 1 in B flat minor. Sounded like it was in mono but I was in the bathroom so wot do I know.

It's one of those ones that I cant make up my mind whether to buy it or not to investigate more fully (I did tape no.2 so I have that one)

Heard the interval talk. About the romantic angst etc etc. Interesting, but not all composers are Mahler you know!

I shall play my Previn Walton sym 1 on LP. Sometimes the old ones are the best.

Always - the old ones are the best as you will find out when you get old.

I am at a most terrible disadvantage never having heard the Pervin Walton 1 or the Bournemouth under Silvestri but for once I managed to hear the full concert and enjoyed it - have far beyond the Pale how I gone I wonder????

The conductor did say it was the first time he had performed it. 'So what?' - I suppose some will say.

I confess to never having really 'got' Walton, but I did buy his 2CD so-called 'Collected Works' [currently available for £5.77] thinking it might help. It includes the concerto recordings by Heifetz, Piatigorsky and Bashmet, the Sinfonia Concertante with Kathryn Stott/RPO/Handley and ..... Symphony No.1/LSO/Previn - so perhaps I should sit down again, dim the lights and see if he can persuade me!
