Not only was the Belcea quartet recital yesterday evening an excellent one but it was followed by a really wonderful pair of performances in the lunchtime 'concert' today from the Ysaÿe and Modigliano quartets playing Schumann and Arriaga. The Arriaga quartet, written when the composer was only 18, showed a really precocious talent - what a pity he died just a year later.

Having had the Quatuor Ebene concert at WH as the end of what was a trying afternoon in London (does Arts Council England have any really useful role other than be obstructive and unhelpful, I wonder) and thereby being in a receptive mood for some balm to the soul, I thought that this concert was pretty special. The Schubert is possibly my favourite SQ anyway but I thought that it was as near a perfect performance as I've ever heard. Anyone else there - or listening to it?
