Well the concert I heard with the Philharmonia under Salonen last year at Birmingham, the Janacek Sinfonietta and Duke Bluebeard's Castle, was one of the best orchestral concerts I have heard live in the last decade or so. And I have been far from impressed with the LSO under Gergiev, particularly in non-Russian repertoire.

In good hands, an inspired band, but less capable of disguising a lack of inspiration.
In any case, this particular programme wouldn't have had me rushing for a ticket whoever was at the helm; apart from the Sibelius, a Classic FM hall of fame programme, putting Rach PC2 with Tchaik 6 to guarantee inter-movement applause in all the worst places (though they're all bad in my book). Of course, if Dutoit had been conducting they'd have kicked off with Finlandia.
I hate the Inter-movement applause too.......perhaps we should start an Anti Inter-movement movement ?

Such a shame. The "Pathetique" was the last work that Dennis Brain played with the Philharmonia at the Edinburgh Festival before he died on September 1st, 1957.

Hope that LS 253 symphonies are better than his idea of suddenly playing the finale of Tchaik 6 whilst the audience are still applauding mvt 3 which they arent supposed to etc etc.
Did any audience members walk out after mvt 3 of Tchaik 6 thinking it was over? Happened at the Proms in 2004!
To get that emotional effect at the start of the finale I had to wait until the opening tune came back round again! I almost had put my CD of the finale adagio on.
Thought this concert was a Proms repeat at first...

I agree with whoever said they were the most conductor dependent orchestra of the London 4 .
I only know them from records but what a wonderful band the old Philharmonia were . The Borodin 2 with Kletzki is playing as I write .

"I've just had a listen to one of his 253 symphonies on you tube......I daren't express my opinion on here , I would get banned for life ! "
Pretend you have to write the CD inlay card as part of your job.
There are ways you can get round this. My Bruckner 9 says" the scherzo is harmonically daring"
i.e. out of tune!
P.S. Did I tell you guys that Tchaikovsky Symphony no.6 is my very first symphony?
