For Flosshilde (M # 46), this is one of the rare cases where me being an American is useful here . We use the term "pinch hitting" in baseball, where a player substitute-bats for the originally rostered player. I think the term is used in cricket as well.
Speaking of Puccini and small-time criminals, did anyone here catch the Met's HD of La fanciulla del West this weekend?
Thanks, blue; I thought it might be an American term (deduced from the fact that it appeared in the NY Times ), but not, of course, that it might be derived from baseball (although an awful lot of expressions are, aren't they? - rather more than from American football?))
