I enjoyed the Brahms, which developed considerable purposefulness, though the last few bars were accelerated a bit too much for my taste so that the wonderful brass calls at the end went for nothing. Shame.

It's my favourite Brahms symphony - I think of it as Brahms's Spring Symphony.

Isserlis was as usual marvellous in the Saint-Seans (or what I was able to hear of it, being called away.)

I was in the car at the time -great combination of Penny's introduction and the lovely Dvorak 8 - vies with Schubert 5 for the sunniest symphony!

Good comparison Cloughie, Beecham wi th the Schubert 5 and lots of good Dvorak 8s around.

Good comparison Cloughie, Beecham wi th the Schubert 5 and lots of good Dvorak 8s around.

VPO Bohm Schub 5, LSO Kertesz or BPO Kubelik Dvo 8 but in truth there are loads of good 'ns of both.

That particular Brahms magic caught my attention. Yes! Yes! It was the BBC Scottish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Only the Concertbebouw does/did Brahms anywhere as good (IMHO). I've been puzzling over this for years; why does the BRSSO have this affinity with Brahms symphonies? The old warhorse becomes a flying Pegasus with these magicians. Bravo!

Welcome, Old Git Tom. Do I gather you have connections with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as it is known? It was a nice concert and must listen again to that Brahms.

No salymap, no connections, just a listener. Didn't it use to be 'BBC Scottish RADIO - - - - Orch' ? Whatever the name, whoever the conductor, they seem to give Brahms a partiular magic. This is over many years. I originally suspected the young Simon Rattle had introed the musos to some novel 'stuff' - obviously not the case!
