...and some of you have the temerity to sneer at Radio 3 for playing bleeding chunks!

Pfitzner and Szell came off best there to my ears. Surprised Lenny only played 2 chords!

On the evidence of the samples played, Blomstedt was my favourite.
Otherwise my top recommendation remains VPO/Erich Kleiber.

Listening again, four that for me get right both the weight and the naturalness of the phrase are:

                Szell, Walter, Bernstein and Abbado.

So many seem unnecessarily portentous (often using an agogic pause).

For the obsessive amongst us, the following site (dormant since Dec 2009) is devoted to performances of the Eroica in all their manifold variety.

well simply on a first listen Jordi Savall hit me as the hippest ...
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

And the rest of the performance matches up to the excitement: I love it!

Sounds like one of those minimalist compsitions

Well at least it's better than Johnny 'No notes' Cage!

It's interesting how some folk regard this recording as a question of "which one do I like the most" ?
on the CEC (Canadian Electroacoustic Community) newsgroup people have referred to this recording in a more philosophical way and as a discussion point about how music (and recording technology) has changed or not.
On here the original post had the phrase "so revealing" which I think is true , but revealing of what ? My own "tastes" ? The apparent lack of precision in some orchestras ? The changes in pitch ? The apparent completely different voicing of some of these recordings ?

Oh yes, Mr GG! And the diverse acoustics in which they were recorded. Toscanini in a broom cupboard apparently.

A quick mention for Ensemble 28, directed by Daniel Grossman, in which the orchestra is the exact same number of musicians that LvB had at his disposal for the first performance, as I understand it. The opening youtube clip is immensely fascinating, notwithstanding.
