The "Prince's" is Charles H.H.Parry, Myfanwy is by Joseph Parry

Me neither. It makes me very angry that classical music has become so marginalised.

Classical music is no more marginalised than it has ever been. Just because the Jubilee Concert- one single event- is not predominantly classical doesn't mean we're all going to hell in a handcart. Get some perspective.

I cannot agree on this one. I look at the situation in schools where so many opt for the utterly crass (though well-meaning) Sing-Up programme, basically bringing children up on dumbed-down "poppy" ditties, with a guitar and drums backing track, or led in concert by an attention-seeking ageing hippy.

So many children never experience classical music at all because of cowardly educationalists. And now HM's advisers are doing the same.

For the most part I agree. Although for Public Schools, they (at least the one I work at), are doing classical music a very good service indeed!

.....but what % of children go to Public School? 0% of the Gould brood if that is a representative sample?.........

Yes, and the division is increasing year by year.

From my experience working in a variety of schools there is an increasing division in the provision of music as a subject in state schools
I've been to Academy schools where there is NO music , they don't have to follow the national curriculum at all
and others where the participation i music is outstanding in many genres (i'm doing a project for a national music organisation in one like this at the moment !)
I do think that the new National Plan for music education will make this worse not better , the emphasis on performance (which usually means putting on a mid Atlantic musical ) over composition and more academic study will mean that things which are affordable (i.e Singing) will probably do well (not making any comment about content though ) and other areas will diminish. At the moment things are very patchy and this will increase. for example, if you play in the Youth Orchestra in Birmingham you get an ensemble run by the CBSO with CBSO players coaching you and an end of term concert in Symphony Hall with a great (sometimes very great indeed !) conductor, if you play in the Youth Orchestra in another (for now nameless !) county you get an ensemble run by a struggling music service (soon to be replaced of course !) with an end of term concert in a sports hall conducted by the percussion tutor !
I know which i would opt for to inspire my children and the students I work with .............

I can see why people cut out music etc, but this does help to build strong characters and to help working in a team and listening to others to!!

                                You're right, and I think it's tragic.
