    BBC Phil/Sakari/Mother Goose

Anyone that loves this score will I think be very pleased by what they hear in this live performance broadcast this afternoon. Not perfect in every particular but concluding with some of the most rapt and beautiful playing and phrasing I have heard in this magical piece.

I shall not fail to check this out on the iPlayer, thanks for the tip. I love this score, that's for sure, and the conclusion is one of my favourite things in music.

My favourite version is an odd and unexpected one, which I heard and was transfixed by one morning on CD Masters a couple of years ago - I was delighted to find that it was still available. A random-seeming Chandos issue of a live concert by the Danish National RSO under Termikanov. Why on earth would Chandos have brought this out?! A strange release but the final movement of Ma Mère L'Oye is more or less how I hear it in my dreams . For the rock-bottom prices on amazon marketplace (less than the price of a pint) I commend all Mother Goose fanciers to take a punt.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It was certainly electrifying. It was also much longer than I thought it would be - I was expecting the suite, but presume we got the complete ballet version with its added movements and interludes.
      .
Is this why the concert overran? It was great to have the 5 o'clock news at ten past.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed this extended version of Ma merr l'oye, I listened to this concert principally to hear Sinbelius' 4th as it was conducted by Petri Sakari who gave a very interesting introductory talk about it. However, I was very disappointed with the resultant performance which, to me, lacked cohesion and conviction.

I've yet to hear this on i-Player, but I know what a revelation it was to hear the complete Daphnis & Chloe for the first time, rather than just Suite no. 2.

I love this score. Soooo Christmassy, unbelievable. Slatkin is a real;;ly top notch comductor. Pity his tenure at BBCSO wasn't very good one.

People say this, but I've never understood why.

I heard Simon Rattle conducting the CBSO in Boston Symphony Hall (1990?) and they played Le jardin féerique as an encore. None present will ever forget that final chord. They bettered BSO in their own hall!
