Therein lies part of the problem. Radio is so dominated by stations playing the same sort of commercial pop, that it seems anything that doesn't fit under that umbrella is now being shoved on to R3. If I wanted to hear Ella, Bing & Sinatra then it would be to R2 that I would have expected to turn.

Perhaps someone up there in the BBC clouds thinks that Radio 3 should be like BBC3.

...When will they realize all they need to do is remain loyal to the cause of Radio Three!

Sorry to lower the tone, but as it's nearly Christmas:

          (Scots accent required)
          Q. What's the difference between Bing Crosby and Walt Disney?
          A. Bing sings and Walt Disney.

At least you can switch it off on Radio 3. In supermarkets, you don't have that option.

I feel sorry for the supermarket and other shop workers who have to cope with christmas music being blared out all day long from early November in some cases.

The Co-op/Somerfield is particular bad with early exploitation of Christmas. My gripe is that even the "good guys", Tesco and Sainsbury's, who usually don'y play piped music, do so in the run-up to Christmas.

...I think one can be disciplined &"switch off" all canned Musak from outside sources-
Supermarkets etc.One would expect R3 to be more selective,however-EG there is
plenty of unknown Piano Repertoire alone to which Listeners could be introduced!

I think that must make me highly indisciplined. Filtering out sounds/"switching off" is very difficult for those of us who spend time listening to music.

                            Sunday 19 December, 1976.
Radio 3. 10.45 pm Sounds Interesting

Absolutely, Suffolkcoastal! The trouble is that typical modern management has not the slightest interest in the views of front-line staff or customers ... both are way down the pecking-order in importance compared to keeping-up with the tawdry retail outfit down the road. It just needs the management of one major retailer to decide that it would be a fun idea for its shop-floor staff to start throwing Xmas pies at the customers, and I'll almost guarantee the others willl end up doing it. Believe me, due to no little experience in this field, I'm not joking!

...Well I'm reminded of a shop in London selling jeans next to a quiet Library room. Much as the
latter complained Re loud pop music disturbing their readers, the jeans Shop would aver that
without the loud music NO jeans would be sold!
