    Arise Sir Bilbo Pappano

Great to see the Hobbit of CG honoured in the New Year list...let us hope that he stays at the ROH for many years to come.

If he doesn't, my current short list is Mark Elder, Nicola Luisotti and Semyon Bychkov...

Speaking as another shorthouse (5 foot two soaking wet ) I do hope no-one ever calls me a Hobbit though it is only fair to report that I did tower over Ronnie Corbett when I met him about 15 years ago and neither of us will have grown any taller in the interim.

Anyway, Karajan and Ashkenazy, among conductors, are/were about the same.

Why are you afraid of posting:
                Short ass
                Short a#se
                etc..?

You're a bit sharp with your spelling, waldy.

Mind you nicknames like Hobbit are second nature at the ROH. Solti, usually The Screaming Skulll, was also referred to as Gollum.

Do they have a nickname for Bryn Terfel? I like to call him Big Turtle, but that's probably just me.....

A colleague drove me nuts by referring to Placido Domingo as Plastic Dominoes.

Do short conductors at the ROH stand on a box to conduct? The pit is all on one level isn't it?

                          Salymap,

No, there is a conductor's podium, well above the base level of the pit. I think the punter sitting in the centre directly behind the conductor may welcome the shorter maestro!

Thanks Simon. It's not easy to see from higher up in the theatre.[ Upper circle if I was paying, box if comps were given]

Most opera conductors that I have seen sit down to conduct .
