Best live performance I've heard came from Rattle and the CBSO in a 1994 concert in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Corker of a programme, too: Varese - Ionisation, Berg - Violin Concerto then the DSCH 4.

Most memorable live performance I attended was the BBCSO and Rozhdestvensky in his first concert with them as Chief Conductor Proms 1978. It's now avaolable as a DVD on the ICA label.

I'm sure that I was also at that Shostokovich 4 in Birmingham under Rattle in 1994, I just went to every concert he gave, and naturally I've got the recording, interestingly coupled with Britten's 'Russian Funeral'. But I have a soft spot for Järvi's account too with the SNO. A remarkable work of true courage in the face of sheer terror.

But what an extraordinary piece of music

- the greatest symphony that Mahler never wrote?

No: for me, the greatest Symphony Shostakovich ever did!

I heard it first at the Proms under Gergiev. Amazing. I believe I have it recorded somewhere in a computer file.

When conducted by Mravinsky, I'd also make this exception. Otherwise, only the Fifteenth rivals the Fourth in my opinion.
