I couldn't care less, if they make great music, I'm afraid!

VPO is only one orchestra, "the Christians" can make equally great music in any other orchestra, which I would enjoy just as much. I just don't care, I'm afraid!

Ha! Maybe they could become the Vienna Islamic Philharmonic! I couldn't care less, I would still listen to them, if their playing was fine. That's all I care about when I listen to a concert.

You can say pretty much anything. If they were the Vienna Convicts Orchestra, or the Vienna non-Human Orchestra, I would still listen to their Strauss if it was amazing and I could learn from it!

If Strauss is that important to you, do not let me get in your way

As I'm sure you know, I said Strauss because it's mostly that what they'll play at the New Year's Concert. Wasn't that the topic to start with?

I would be absolutely against the VPO if their policy was spreading again to other institutions. But that is no longer the case - they are now an "oddity", more like some curious "historical relic"! And actually I believe in time even the VPO will gradually and very ... very slowly have more and more female and "foreign" members. And with every new female or "foreign looking" member they will have, the "conservative" camp will weaken, up to a point when it could not be an issue any more.

In the meantime they still make great music often which for me as a musician is ... paramount.

Well, this has been a most entertaining exchange, I must say.

At the moment, 40-30 to Sapere Aude.

              New Balls Please!!!

Interesting exchange certainly but it only serves to illustrate why I am sick and tired of this mind-numbing argument every year.

The VPO would be a great orchestra even if they didn't play a note of the Waltz King's output. The fact that they do clouds the issue.

I'm happy enough with the French words on that site but the English confuses me.

Plus: what is with all these moving/jumping smileys?: the sort of thing I expect from my grandkids?

Let's just talk about orchestras, composers, music, etc. The wobbly bits are rather babyish.

Well, excuse me. I think you'll find that this thread moved away from the music and onto the issue of women in the VPO, or the lack of them, some time ago. And it wasn't me that started that debate.

As for the moving smileys:- just trying to have a bit of fun.

                          Merry Christmas!

VPO 2012 program officially on the orchestra website

Well, the VPO have officially posted the 2012 New Year's Day program, where I do acknowledge missing one of the co-composers in the first piece (my bad, natch). Here's the copy and paste from the VPO's site:

                            'Programm:

Johann und Joseph Strauß: "Vaterländischer Marsch"
Johann Strauß: "Rathausball-Tänze", Walzer, op. 438
Johann Strauß: "Entweder – oder!", Polka schnell op. 403
Johann Strauß: "Tritsch-Tratsch", Polka, op. 214
Carl Michael Ziehrer: "Wiener Bürger", Walzer, op. 419
Johann Strauß: "Albion Polka", op. 102
Joseph Strauß: "Jokey Polka", Polka schnell, op. 278

                            - Pause -

                            Joseph Hellmesberger d.J.: Danse Diabolique
Joseph Strauß: "Künstler-Gruß", Polka française, op. 274
Johann Strauß: "Freuet euch des Lebens", Walzer, op. 340
Johann Strauß Vater: "Sperl Galopp", op. 42
Hans Christian Lumbye: "Kopenhagener Eisenbahn Dampf Galopp"
Joseph Strauß: "Feuerfest", Polka française, op. 269
                            Eduard Strauß: "Carmen-Quadrille", op. 134
Peter I. Tschaikowsky: "Panorama" aus dem Ballet "Dornröschen", op. 66
Peter I. Tschaikowsky: "Walzer" aus dem Ballet "Dornröschen", op. 66
Johann und Joseph Strauß: "Pizzicato Polka"
Johann Strauß: "Persischer Marsch", op. 289
Joseph Strauß: "Brennende Liebe", Polka Mazur, op. 129
Joseph Strauß: "Delirien", Walzer, op. 212
Johann Strauß: "Unter Donner und Blitz", Polka schnell, op. 324'
Of course, going back to my first post, implied there was that the "Tik-Tak" polka would be the "surprise encore", before the traditional closers.

I have to dissent (respectfully) from the prior comment that knocked down the Strauss dynasty in favor of Tchaikovsky as the "true waltz king". I've been listening to the 6-CD set of Strauss family waltzes, polkas, marches, etc. with the VPO and Boskovsky recently, and was struck all over again by how consistently strong their quality is. Granted, not every single Strauss waltz (Johann II, Josef, etc.) is gold, but they had to churn out dance music at almost an assembly line pace, and did very well by that. I would certainly rank Tchaikovsky in their class, in terms of overall quality. But for overall "title", I give the nod to the Strauss family.

                              Josef Strauss: Vaterländischer March
Just to note that the Vaterländischer march is actually by Johann & Josef together.

Those who are suitably equipped and inclined might like to note that the first half is televised live on BBC HD at 10:15, BBC2 joining in for the second half only (as usual).
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
