    LSO/Davis/13th December 2011 - Uchida

I missed the first half of this concert sadly ( Nielsen 3) but that was one of the most thrilling and musical Beethoven Fifth Piano Concerto performances I have ever heard - bravo Mitsuko ! and Sir Colin .

Radio 3 are doing us proud with the live concerts this month and we have Renee Fleming and the Four Last songs tomorrow night

    I'm going!

Thank you for pointing out that it is also being broadcast. I shall set it to record!

    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'll be listening out for the unmistakeable sound of Pork Farms' products being unwrapped in the tutti.

      Enjoy the concert, Chaliapin

      Other pork products are available

I listened to the concert and very much enjoyed it.

But I do have a problem with the balancing of the Beethoven concerto, as I did with last week's broadcast. The balance between piano and orchestra was very much tilted in favour of the piano. This meant that much of the interplay between orchestral instruments (and even quiet strings) and the solo piano was lost - you always heard the piano loud and clear but had to strain to hear the other side of any quiet conversation with the orchestral instruments. I know this highlighting of the soloist is common practice but, when obvious care had been taken by Colin Davis and the orchestral musicians to get the balance right in the hall, it can and sometimes does harm the overall result, though this was more evident with last weeks broadcast - probably because of the different nature of the two concerti.

You can take the lad out of Nottingham, but you can't take Nottingham out of the lad, eh?

Reminds me, must get one of their extra massive seasonal Festive Pork Pies in for the old yuletide family onslaught...

Just giving this a fresh listen on CDR - it hasn't paled and is definitely a notch above her performance with Sanderling on Decca.
