Has anyone on this forum ever played under Rattle? If so, could they, and I ask this question in all seriousness, tell us whether his facial expressions are off-putting or otherwise? I have to say that it has never really bothered me as an audience member but on last night's broadcast under the merciless glare of the TV cameras I found it extremely distracting. More recent concert broadcasts do seem to suggest that he may have toned it down somewhat since 2004.

I have noticed that more recent concerts have shown a little mellowing of mouth movements by SR.
I read that this coming Friday on BBC 4 Sir Colin Davis and the LSO are to give us Sibelius's Kullervo and Finlandia. A question is (in the light of last night's cuts) will we really get Finlandia which (if I remember the original broadcast) included the male chorus?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Actually, I was thinking that if BBC cuts mean that they have more and more recourse to their archives for concerts like this, rather than making lightweight new stuff involving the Hazelwoods of this world travelling expensively around the planet just to deliver two lines of commentary, then bring on more cuts, say I..."...the isle is full of noises,

By the way, last night's BPO LvB 9 was introduced by Simon Russell Beale as a tie-in to the BBC4 series on the symphony."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
