Not quite, Robert. On most daytime material the dynamic range of the music is much reduced by Optimod. In theory the presenter's voice level.
should peak lower than the average music level, though there are certainly some bizarre effects nowadays. It is quite common to hear chamber or instrumental music following on at a much higher level than the orchestral work that preceded it.
That said, I'm in agreement with you about Petroc Trelawny, he's certainly not a bellowing oaf.

Unfortunately, our anonymity on these boards seems to act as an encouragement to out and out rudeness, and I know that I've sinned in this regard myself.

I agree with FF here .Robert may well be right about why the annoucners sound so loud but surely it is much better just to make the point without insulting the contributor no matter what you think of their posting ?

Plenty of Optimod on FM, for sure, but except when they mess up, as with Proms 1 and 4 this summer, it does not get used for the digital offerings of DAB, Freeview, FreeSat and iPlayer.

Well, I haven't - if for no better reason than that it's pretty obvious who I am here!...

There's certainly a hint on who you are!

The most egregious mismatch is regularly between studio and the music levels in Choral Evensong.
Every week, I have to ramp up the volume to almost ludicrous levels to hear the music and the blast of studio continuity at the end is deafening. Very irritating.
