I like the cut of Maisie's jib! Could some of us Londoners club together, hire a room and lay on some victuals & some liquid refreshment, and invite Maisie MBE to tell us about her time as Glorious John's principal trombonist? just a thought!

I must say I'm most impressed by the devil-may-care insouciance with which VentilHorn appeared from nowhere and stormed to the front of the FoR3 2011 Ribald Comment Competition (Unintentional Section) - The Baroness Thatcher Prize!

It's a great idea but I wonder if she'd be up for it. Maybe she lets her trombone do the talking... But 'twould be a marvellous evening if she's a good raconteuse.

Given her Sally Army background, the liquid refreshment might have to be wet'n'warm with two sugars...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

            Effortless, wasn't it ?!

            Good job

              Hello am51!

I never knew that the RAM does this sort of thing. I thought you had to be a professional musician to enter those sacred doors. I'm in London soon as my wife is crazy on the O2 tennis, and we're staying at Marble Arch.

I'm going to go on the RAM website. Do you by any chance know how well attended these talks are please?

              Mario

You can simply walk into the RAM for events
most of the folk in there are students so not really "professional" musicians (the ones that are nip in and out in between gigs !)
ask at the desk where the event is and they are very friendly

I had a friend studying at the RAM in the 1950s and attended all sorts of lectures and talks with her and no-one seemed to mind. There always seemed plenty of space for a few visitors anyway.

It's a total breeze, Mario - I've been to many free concerts, masterclasses etc and everyone is very friendly and pleased to see you. For example I recently attended a three hour piano masterclass by pianist John O'Conor covering Beethoven op.101, op.31 no 2 and Mozart K331. Just wonderful. You're not expected to have a score in your hand, you're just expected to be quiet, laugh at the maestro's jokes, gasp at the insights & clap at the end of each section - and it's all free!

Tomorrow I'm off to the free lunchtime orchestral concert by the Academy Orchestra with Trevor Pinnock, a programme including Schubert symphony no 5

Just a thought - why is he not Sir Trevor Pinnock by this?

Just going bac to the BBc Phil for a moment I began to notice them when they were being conducted by Noseda - only saw them on TV never live http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianandrea_Noseda

                        Were others impressed?

Good point earlier about Sibelius writing his 4th when sober - I had forgotten that - I believe he had to give up cigars at the same time which will have made him a very grumpy old Hector.

Sorry last reference was to Hector's house - a classic of UK childrens TV - I know Sibelius's name is Jean!

Re the Manchester Orchestras, don't overlook the Manchester Camerata which is a very fine chamber enemble! Then, 30 or so miles to the west is the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. The North West is indeed fortunate to have such wonderful professional orchestras, and I hope that they will all survive unscathed in these times of economic stringencies.
