Yes I know there is a :sigh:emoticon.
What we really need is a :total world weariness: emoticon.
[As it happens, Elgar does nothing for me - and tonite I'm dining out - but the :sigh: :weariness: emotions/emoticons remain valid ]
I'm working on a *Weltschmerz* emoticon for you to use..."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

... odd, ain't it? - that we have to go to the furriners for expressions like that - I mean, what's the English for Weltschmerz - Verneinung des Willens - ennui - aboulia - accidie/acedia ???Last edited by vinteuil; 06-10-11, 12:50.

Surely a "good" Elgar concert is a tautology ?
(JOKE )
When my daughter was young I almost convinced her that El-Gar was the Spanish word for station
which it should be ! At least she now has grown out of the idea of playing the Cello concerto and is learning the Britten Suites and Ligeti Sonata !
phew
(I had far too much Elgar inflicted on me by my piano teacher when I was a teenager, she was bonkers, and spoke to him from beyond the grave so its a bit of a block for me .......... though the 1st Symphony is a wonderful piece indeed )

noun, plural -gies.
1. needless repetition of an idea, especially in words other than those of the immediate context, without imparting additional force or clearness, as in “widow woman.”
2. an instance of such repetition.
3. Logic .
a. a compound propositional form all of whose instances are true, as “A or not A.”

"What has happened to the Elgar symphonies on R3 this year? "
They are always on!
Or it seems like they are.
