There are benign uses of emoticons which are very useful in a situation where you can't always judge what lies behind a particular comment. There are others which are used as ways of 'attacking' other posters.
If someone clearly says something funny (it does happen here!), an 'ROFL' emoticon from another poster is fine as an acknowledgement. If someone has made a straight comment expressing their point of view, 'ROFL' is merely jeering. 'Laugh' if you're fairly sure there will be general laughter; don't if it is simply inviting one faction to laugh at another, or at an individual.

I would let you all know when I have nothing to say - worthwhile or otherwise - on any thread; except that it would take up rather a lot of my time, which is far too valuable to waste. So you will have to guess which threads I have nothing to say about.
(I think the grammar has gone rather awry there, but I'm sure you understand what I'm saying )
I'm busy doing nothing, working the whole day through,
Trying to find lots of things not to do,
I'm busy going nowhere................does anyone know the remainder?
