There are benign uses of emoticons which are very useful in a situation where you can't always judge what lies behind a particular comment. There are others which are used as ways of 'attacking' other posters.

If someone clearly says something funny (it does happen here!), an 'ROFL' emoticon from another poster is fine as an acknowledgement. If someone has made a straight comment expressing their point of view, 'ROFL' is merely jeering. 'Laugh' if you're fairly sure there will be general laughter; don't if it is simply inviting one faction to laugh at another, or at an individual.

A PhD thesis has probably already been written on the subject.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I've always enjoyed the variation "if you've got nothing good to say about someone, come and sit next to me"

Perhaps the original poster may think that none of us have anything worthwhile to say?

I would let you all know when I have nothing to say - worthwhile or otherwise - on any thread; except that it would take up rather a lot of my time, which is far too valuable to waste. So you will have to guess which threads I have nothing to say about.

(I think the grammar has gone rather awry there, but I'm sure you understand what I'm saying )

This rather reminds me of the old song....

I'm busy doing nothing, working the whole day through,
Trying to find lots of things not to do,
I'm busy going nowhere................does anyone know the remainder?

Gosh doesn't Bing Crosby look young? Perhaps that will lighten and close this thread.
