The 9th. A lot of people say it’s a poor work and shouldn’t have been written, that it shows a man whose talent has completely disintegrated. At least two distinguished speakers this weekend have specifically said that the festival should have stopped at the 8th.

    And yet...

I have never been left so emotionally devastated by a piece of music. At the end, I couldn’t even clap. I was just... numb. I had to go and walk round outside during the interval because people were trying to talk to me and... I couldn’t talk.

I expect music to affect me emotionally. If a concert doesn’t make me cry, I think something’s wrong. But I’ve never felt like this before. In isolation, I don’t know if it would have had the same impact. But as the culmination of the intense weekend, following the journey through Arnold’s life in his symphonies, to be hit with this... this... was just indescribable. I don’t think any other experience could match this.

And yes you can see its flaws and yes you can see that it lacks the skill and flair of his earlier work. But I don’t believe this was written by a broken man who was no longer mentally capable of composing. I think this was written by a man who knew exactly what he wanted to say and exactly how he wanted to say it.
Many thanks from me, too, IRF

What also strikes me in your comments on the Ninth here (in addition to the power of your response) is how similar the critical comments of others are to those that first greeted RVW's own Ninth Symphony, which is now only just making its way into the reperoire after decades of, at best, patronizing critical attitudes. Let's hope Arnold's Ninth takes less time to find its true place.

    Best Wishes.

Whatever ones feelings and sympathies about Arnold, Vaughan Williams was a saintly man, and the thought has always saddened me that, unlike his great friend Holst, he might have gone to his grave a troubled man.

Appreciation from me too IRF for taking the time and trouble to post those reviews. I find the 9th symphony emotionally draining too!

A very good report, and thanks for listing all the programmes - what an amazing festival to mount over a weekend. I would have liked to have gone to a couple of the chamber music concerts, as I enjoy Arnold's writing for wind instruments. Pretty exhausting for anyone attending all the events, I imagine.

Hull Philharmonic Orchestra and The East Riding Youth Orchestra are playing the same programme plus Copland Clarinet Concerto in November:-

Thank you for reminding me about this place, Andrew (464) :)

Andrew Penny did mention the Hull concert at the Arnold weekend, and I would be very tempted to go (I like the Copland concerto very much) except I'm in Glasgow for another concert that day.

                    Symphony No. 1 on R3

A very spirited performance of the first symphony (BBCCO/ Keith Lockhart) was broadcast last Friday afternoon (2nd December). It's still available on the iPlayer, about 53 minutes in.

                            There's an outline programme here

Although not as ambitious as last year's festival, which included all the numbered symphonies, I think it will be worth going - I certainly will be.

I understand that the weekend pass is to be £12 again (I think only obtainable by ringing the Derngate box office on 01604 624811), which includes all events except the final concert on the Sunday evening. (Ticket prices for that concert seem to start at £20 - see Derngate web site

The festival starts at 3pm on Saturday 20th October and finishes with the evening concert on Sunday 21st October. Accommodation at the local Travelodge (5-10 minutes' walk from Derngate) (Northampton Central) is OK and cheap, if booked well in advance. (If booking two nights it seems to be cheaper to book them separately.) Travel via London Midland trains is also reasonable. (e.g. £6 each way from Stoke-on-Trent, if bought in advance.)

But I've just realised you will know all that already .... if I'm helping your publicity, I'm glad to be of service!

I'm tempted by this year's festival, but haven't taken the plunge of buying tickets yet. I'm trying to cut down on the amount of travelling I do for concerts (money gets ever tighter) and I'm already committed to too many over the autumn.

The programme doesn't excite me as much as previous years' have, but in its favour is the late Saturday start, meaning one less night in a hotel... undecided

Anyone else know Arnold's Symphony for Brass and Percussion(orchestral brass). That's another work of his like, but his Fantasy for brass band, that's a different kettle of fish. One day i like it, next day day, I'd rasther not hear it at all!!
