Mahler 8, Berlin Phil in September at Odeon Cinemas

The Odeon Cinemas are again airing famous musicians in a live screening, this time of Mahler's Eighth Symphony. This will come via satellite from Berlin with the BPO forces under Simom Rattle on Sunday 18th of September 2011 at 18.30 pm.

The advertised cast is as follows:

    Sun 18 Sep 2011 6:30 p.m.
    British local time

    Berliner Philharmoniker
    Sir Simon Rattle Conductor

    Erika Sunnegårdh,
    Susan Bullock ,
    Anna Prohaska,
    Karen Cargill,
    Nathalie Stutzmann,
    Johan Botha,
    Matthias Goerne,
    John Relyea
    Rundfunkchor Berlin
    MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig
Knaben des Staats- und Domchors Berlin

    Gustav Mahler
    Symphony No. 8 »Symphony of a Thousand«

Also works by Thomas Tallis and Antonio Lotti

I hope my local Odeon will use the big screen as it has a great sound system.

That's very tempting - I see that it's showing in Harrogate, Lincoln and Manchester all of which are within sensible reach. Does anybody know which of those has the best sound system (my guess would be Mcr, but I'm not sure).

Very tempting, as others have said. The prices at the my nearest participating cinema (Taunton, 50 miles away) are £12.50 or £13.60!

Not a cinema broadcast this time, but the Rattle/BPO Mahler 8 is being broadcast on R3 this afternoon - I presume it is the same performance. I listened to their performance of Mahler 7 a week or so ago and although there was some wonderful playing, I found Rattle's tendency to focus in on particular details (and also slow down almost to a stop in the second Nachtmusik) distracting and obscured any overall conception of the work he might have had.
