Many congratulations to BBC4 for putting on The Soldier's Tale.
I've adored the piece ever since it was done (played and spoken but not acted) by fellow students. The English translation was different (old one: "Down the hot and dusty road, goes a soldier with his load") but this was brought brilliantly up to date.
I was having French lessons (privately at the time) and got my teacher ...who said it was 'Swiss French'..to go through the original with me.
Also, the chorale-like section played at one point was given to us as an aural test. Bit of a challenge!
Again, well done BBC for screening a fabulous performance done by Mark Elder with players from The Hallé.
