The Soldier's Tale (Stravinsky) on BBC4

Many congratulations to BBC4 for putting on The Soldier's Tale.
I've adored the piece ever since it was done (played and spoken but not acted) by fellow students. The English translation was different (old one: "Down the hot and dusty road, goes a soldier with his load") but this was brought brilliantly up to date.

I was having French lessons (privately at the time) and got my teacher ...who said it was 'Swiss French'..to go through the original with me.

Also, the chorale-like section played at one point was given to us as an aural test. Bit of a challenge!

Again, well done BBC for screening a fabulous performance done by Mark Elder with players from The Hallé.

A vibrant and bold new take on Stravinsky’s dark musical masterpiece from the Hallé.

Very pleased to see this. I know the suite fairly well, also the trio version, but this is the first time I've seen the full version acted and danced since a Prom in 1971. Very well done, as far as I remember 50 years later.

Checked the archive. Interesting concert with Luciano Berio in person in the second half.

I forgot it :( . I saw it done in the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre some years ago, but it was danced, and I don't remember it being sung - might have been spoken.

There was also a good BBC pefromance mid-1970s with Alfred Burke (he of 'Public Eye' currently being repeated on TalkingPictures TV). This may have been a Prom.
