      There's never been a "best performance" of this weary meme. It would do the musical public a service if all copies could be buried in lead caskets at the bottom of a Peruvian swamp.

                I'll start with Roger Norrington's recording of Mahler 9.
                Bugs Bunny Overtures to Disaster (Warner Bros video 1998 purchased in charity shop reduced to £1.49) - hours of fun and early introduction to the classics and opera for grandkids - still making grandmother of 6 teenagers 'lol and singalong'!
