    Radio 3 in Concert - Blomstedt /VPO Bruckner 4

    This was a stunner: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0014g94

Due to R3’s increasing tendency to think they know better than major orchestras’ concert management, I’d foolishly assumed that it was conducted by Thielemann who directed the VPO in the first piece in this “concert” (and been very impressed with his conducting about which I’ve had doubts in the past).

It makes much more sense that this gripping reading of the piece was under Blomstedt
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I tuned into this during the last movement on my way home from Choir - it seemed to be a very disjointed performance but then that finale has that nature anyway but I was surprised when Fiona said it was Blomstedt whose recordings I have great admiration for. Maybe the first three movements were better, Nick.
