Can anyone identify this lunchtime concert work?

    Hello

I found this orphan track in my iTunes library:

I believe it was an off-air recording of part of a recent Lunchtime Concert (not sure when).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello David. I hope you've come to the right place here and someone will come up with the answer (it's not Mozart!).

    Bryn? RichardB? Jayne?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Not a lot of help, but it might be in this list from my database - playlists from all the lunchtime concerts over the past year. Change the number of days and the start date in the appropriate search boxes to modify the search.

No way to tie up with the length of the piece, I suppose - just over 5 mins - without first identifying something. I'm hopeless at identying instruments but did I hear two violins and a viola? (Just in case that gets the suggestions coming in).

The most similar work I can find is Arvo Part's 'Summa' for string quartet.

I skimmed through the whole list of Lunchtime Concerts for the past 365 days (Andrew's listings database), looking for a piece of approximately 5'30", and by the time Schubert, C Schumann and Tchaikovsky had been rejected, there was a piece by Daniel Fardon, Elements of Disco - which didn't sound promising but I listened on Youtube anyway, played by the Carducci Quartet - interesting, but still no. Are you certain it was on Lunchtime Concert? Summa was on Afternoon Concert last October.

I don't recognise it. It certainly isn't Summa.

Not really my cup of tea, but it's the start of Deirdre Gribbin's "Dark Matter Hunting" from "West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2021 (3/4)", 30/9/2021. The whole piece is ~27 mins long.

There's a 1min clip (inc. announcer) for comparison here:

John Toal introduces highlights from the 2021 West Cork Chamber Music Festival, with performances presented virtually from across Europe and the US.
Today's programme begins with two short pieces by Lili Boulanger - her Nocturne and Cortege - played by violinist Siobhán Doyle and pianist Alexei Grynyuk in Studio 150, Amsterdam
Joaquín Turina's La Oración del Torero, the Prayer of the Bullfighter, follows. This tone poem for String Quartet is performed by the Grammy-winning Pacifica Quartet in the Auer Hall of Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University
The dark and sinister Black Mass Piano Sonata by Scriabin comes next. It's performed by Anna Fedorova in the Kleine Zaal at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.
And finally, we return to Indiana University for the World Premiere of Dark Matter Hunting by the Northern Irish composer Deirdre Gribbin. It was commissioned by the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and is performed by the Pacifica Quartet.

Didn't pick out the cello, though - and was fooled into thinking it was a 5min piece. Hope DavidL will return to find his mystery has been solved.

Even if he doesn't, it's been a fun search.

Also, the syntax for querying Andrew S's R3 listings is very handy.

                            Wow!

Very many thanks for finding this. It looks as though the first movement of the work got lost when processing the recording. I have: 'A day without yesterday', 'Black rain', 'Einstein cross' and 'Internebula' as stated by the announcer. Have you any idea what the first movement is called? I've searched and cannot find a listing.
