I vividly recall Das Lied von der Erde at a Prom in 1976. I was standing only a few feet away as he launched thrillingly into the opening Trinklied.

Thanks for extra info. Janet Baker was the other soloist at the Prom I saw, conducted by Andrew Davis. I got that recommendable Leppard/Free Trade Hall recording.
