PS It wasn’t me coughing at the start of the Act 3 prelude ….
Indeed Gosta wore a silver cuirass in the final scene of that initial run. It acted like a lighthouse, sending out multiple rays, dazzling startled audience members caught in its beams. It was ditched in subsequent revivals.

Thanks for confirming and indeed reminding me . I was in the stalls circle and directly in the firing line. It was incredibly distracting that cuirass!

        "This tight-fitting cuirass
        Is but a useless mass,
        It's made of steel,
        And weighs a deal,
        This tight-fitting cuirass
        Is but a useless mass,
A man is but an ass
        Who fights in a cuirass,
So off, so off goes that cuirass".

She bowed out about 18 months ago!

                  She had some pluck, too.

Highly strung as well, I expect.

We still need a recording of Ida’s Promenade Concert performance of the Elgar Concerto with Sir Bernard.

It must be in the BBC vaults somewhere.
