Celebrating Bernard Haitink Friday 7th Jan - Saturday 15 Jan

This hasn’t been very heavily trailed but this six part series starts tonight

“In the first of six live concert archive recordings celebrating the great conductor who died in October, Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in an all-Strauss programme.”

No coincidence I suppose Alps, that the programme for this evening encouraged you to draw our attention to it!

This was flagged up in the Haitink thread the other day.

Good to be having this series but, apart from a couple of BPO concerts, I've heard all of these before. The BBC's own archives must be heaving with the amount of Haitink material available and it's odd that they have to pull in recordings from elsewhere. I'd have preferred a larger overview of Haitink's career to include memorable Proms and other performances given in the 1970s and 80s but we'd need another series to do a proper job of it.

Perhaps there will be time for some examples after the main concert has finished?

I wonder if they are EBU recordings and possibly rights free whereas BBC ones might generate repeat fees ? Just don’t know enough about how the classic music business works these days but that would be my suspicion.

I’m pleased there’s no Also on the forum - that would totally confuse me - I blame Alps for adding your Ein!
Just ordered a 2nd hand copy of Haitink Alpine Sym from WoB!

Very touching performances tonight. Sir Bernard and the Concertgebouw difficult to beat.

This is a blinder of a Hammerklavier from Murray Perahia too.

I wonder if the archives still hold a R4 announcement before the 8 O'Clock News, c1970?, of a BH concert that evening on R3. I couldn't swear to it but was pretty sure he was named as Bernard Bite-Nick.

Set me on the way to school rejoicing
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Great news! It wasn't a role he sang often (even Hotter found it a stretch) but JT really dug into the character, presenting him as a flawed, angry figure, not the conventionally genial figure we usually get.

Just caught up with last week’s R Strauss concert - lovely playing and singing in the 4LS and a very good Alpine.
Tonight’s Haitink archive offering - interestingly two Mozart works S38/VC3 - not much Haitink Mozart on CD - wonder if this can be remedied now from concert recordings!

Indeed .Saw this several times. BH’s conducting of and the brass playing in the Act 3 prelude never equalled IMO. Weird thing to single out but really sticks in my mind …

I was at that Prom, and although I have the recording, I'll be listening again. Ironically, the 'Prague' is the only Mozart symphony to appear on a Haitink CD (coupled with a Bruckner 8 on Profil) and it's a great shame as Haitink did them many times in concert, often preceding the inevitable Mahler or Bruckner. Perhaps the RCO label can make amends and fill the gap by issuing a very nice two CD set lifted from live recordings.

As spoken of so movingly by Thomas Allen in the documentary repeated last night on BBC Four.

Will definitely be listening for once to this Saturday evening opera (re)broadcast
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
