    Satie: Vexations

Igor Levit is performing this tonight (30 May) from Berlin - 'to highlight the plight of artists around the world who have been silenced by coronavirus lockdowns'.

    Guardian story here:

    It is live on Spiegel.de
and quite a show! He is playing from 840 sheets of music which he will be later auctioning in aid of musicians.

If I've done my arithmetic correctly he began playing at 1400 BST, and expects to take 20 hours for the 840 repeats - so perhaps continuing until about 1000 BST on Sunday 31 May.

I recall an all-night performance on Radio Three, with a relay of pianists. From a search, I find ths was on the night of 27-28 May 2000. I had the radio on all through, drifting in and out of sleep - a rather hallucinogenic experience.

This link might work, for those who wish to watch:

Join Igor Levit Vexations, 2018 Gilmore Artist, as he live streams from b-sharp studios in Berlin one of music history’s longest compositions: Erik Satie's Vexations, which lasts approximately 20 hours. The work consists of a theme and two variations which are repeated 840 times by the artist. Learn more here.

PS: OK, fine, ironic time to post, as he is taking a breather at this very moment of this post edit.

            NYT article, post-Vexations:

I admit that I watched/listened to bits and pieces, rather than the whole thing.

Thanks for the link, Bluestateprommer: I found that interesting to read.

I dipped in a few times to watch on Saturday evening. I am glad that he managed to complete the project - he looked exhausted at times.

He will later be auctioning the 840 sheets of music from which he played; I will post here if I find out anything about that.
