Literally just read the (all too brief ) Times review . What a missed opportunity..

I was there and the reviews are fully justified. It was a very, very special evening.

A friend, who is a professional musician, attended this concert (and the rehearsal) and said it was ‘among the five best I’ve ever seen, and the finest playing I’ve heard from a London orchestra’. He’s not given to hyperbole, so it must have been pretty exceptional. He didn’t think it had been recorded.

There were plenty of microphones above the orchestra, which are not usually there, and nobody in the BBC booth, so my guess is that the Philharmonia have recorded it.

What a shame! I hope the Philharmonia only had that taken down because they plan to release a professional recording. There was also at least one small camera set up on the Choir level at the side (probably the angle they got the mid-performance stills they shared on social media from) with a microphone attached, so it was presumably set up for video. I wonder if they filmed the whole thing, or at least got some good clips?

They probably do have the whole thing from that one camera angle.

However, my recollection is that there weren't the array of microphones you see at a Festival Hall concert being recorded for R3/streaming/commercial release.

That recollection could be wrong, but it's consistent with the sound on that YouTube clip. Note the distinct prominence and weight of the horns and double basses - which were located next to each other behind the position of that camera. This suggests the sound was being recorded from the (admittedly high quality sounding) microphones spatially associated with that camera rather than balanced from a full orchestral array.

It does seem a missed opportunity if so.

Now we can continue from where the Philharmonia were faded away. I missed their refulgent string sound, perhaps the best string playing I've heard from a London orcheatra. But the Finns' more wirey intensity took us faithfully to the end, in the generous leading of cor anglais, then fitful strings, and final dreams of hope (as I felt the 97-yo imagined it).
