    Berg Violin Concerto

Simon Rattle conducts Berg's Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives

R3's concert last night had a beautifully crafted and live performance. It's an endlessly fascinating work for me; it's as if Berg is tantalising his listeners with hints of tonality...and of course not just a hint when the Bach Chorale comes...and I thought the soloist hit the slightly understated mood just right.

(I don't care for Beethoven's oratorio thingy, so switched off afterwards.)

Who were the performers? Oops, saw the link. I still cherish the Perlman recording.

He's a bit more 'forward' if I recall. Lisa Batiashvili was less so, but I liked her approach...and we were treated to a live concert from R3.

I shall listen to this I don’t know christ on the amount of Olives at all and I was more than pleasantly surprised by the Cantata for the Death of Joseph II.

I suspect LB ideal for the Berg but I like my Berg VC rather romantic like Chung and Solti.

I also have Suk/Ancerl, which is emotionally on the bleak side

That remains my 'go-to' recording. Berg's hauptstimme marking beautifully observed and wonderful playing, all-round.

Well, my daughter wants to play the violin after that performance. Listen, are there any musicians? She's 8 y.o.. Probably that's not a bad idea. UPD. Decided to play piano finally, bought her yamaha for kids from the list, but it seems like that's not interesting for her. So, if anyone in London wants a keyboard, send me a PM

Arthur Grumiaux/Igor Markevitch/Concertgebouw was my first CD version. The Gramophone reviewer reported that Grumiaux claimed he could write out the whole score of this work from memory, not just the solo part but all the orchestration.

Here's another quote from the Gramophone review: Then in the final high flights before the coda, the purity and precision as well as the hushed tenderness of Grumiaux's playing will be hard for anyone else to match on record. His final sustained high G shines out at the very end like a faint, distant but clear star.

She'll be able to play the first two bars of the solo part almost straight away.

This rest will have to wait until after she's passed grade 3!
